Priories and Commanderies of the Order

PRIORIES

The Priories are the basic units of the Order.

The Provinces of the Order, which no longer correspond to the “langues” of the past, are the Priories which are created by a decision of Le Petit Conseil with the approval of the Grand Master.

The Priories are managed by a Prior, elected to this office by the chapter of the Priory with the confirmation of Le Petit Conseil, and by the staff of the Priory which is comprised of the Vice Chancellor, Superintendent, Hospitaller and the Herald, who are also elected by the Chapter with the approval of the Prior.

The Chapter of the Priory is the general assembly of the unit. It is comprised of all the Knights and Dames of the Order residing in the jurisdiction of the Priory.

The Chapter meets at least once per year, reads over the activities report of the Priory and approves the accounts and the budget. It deliberates on all of the fundamental problems brought up during the meeting either by the Priory’s administration or by a designated official. The Chapter appoints the Court of Honour of the Priory and decides on the formation of subordinate Commanderies. The Chapter has the right – by avoiding the hierarchical path – to address recommendations or requests directly to Le Petit Conseil or the Sovereign Council.

INDEPENDENT COMMANDERIES

Le Petit Conseil has the power to create Independent Commanderies.

An Independent Commandery is directly attached to Le Petit Conseil through the Grand Commander. The internal organisation, is, if possible by the numbers of its members, the same a of a Priory. The Independent Commandery is leaded by a Commander.

The Petit Conseil with the approval of the Grand Master can, in due time, raise the Independent Commanderies to the ranks of Priories.
